In the Midst:
Environmental Imagery from the Asheville Art Museum

This exhibition from the Asheville Art Museum’s collection, illustrates the inherent grandeur and beauty of nature as well as the human impact on the environment. The primarily black-and-white photographs’ stark contrasts throw subtle details into high relief. Some images capture harsh realities, such as the scars made by roads carved into ancient mountains, overflowing rivers where industrialization has taken hold, or snow blanketing the graveyard of an abandoned manufacturing plant. Others offer a quieter look at coexistence: pecan orchards, a picturesque mill, buildings nestled in their environs, ethereal trees reminding us of nature’s enigmatic spirit. As human-made and natural phenomena become increasingly intertwined, we are reminded of the parallel shifts, interruptions, and journeys that mark the course of the fate of both.
